Here is what we are learning this month:
Math: In math, we are learning how to add and subtract numbers to 20, with regrouping. We are using lots of strategies: breaking numbers apart by tens and ones, using a number line, drawing tens and ones, and using expanded form. Please encourage your child to use the different strategies he/she sees in class. We are also learning to count money to $1.50 and about place value to the hundreds place. Reading: This month, we are reading fiction texts. We are learning to make inferences in order to draw conclusions. When we are reading, we use the information from the text and our schema (background knowledge) to draw conclusions. You can ask your child to tell you what she/he thinks is happening in the story, especially if it’s not explicitly stated. Make sure he/she provides evidence from the text. Writing: This month, we are writing informational texts. We are learning to conduct research about a topic. We will go through the writing process in order to produce an all-about book on a topic of our choice. We continue to practice spelling and writing mechanics. Social Studies & Science: This unit, we are learning about animal habitats: animals depend on other living and nonliving things. Habitats change over time, for many reasons. Habitats must have food, water, shelter, and space. Discuss with your child why habitats may change.
